If they don't protect the ankle as much as possible, they should at least not come off easily.

I actually wear BMW Motorrad boots when I ride my R1100RS as I know I will be going fast. I guess I gear up or not depending on the circumstances or type of bike use. But this brings up the ATGATT policy that some riders have. When I am out working around the place and need to run a errand, I may hop on the Triumph or R90 to run it, I don't put the armor jackets and correct boots on, may be wearing Romeos at the time as they are my work boots, t shirt and jeans. Bikes are a mode of convenient transport, wearing all the gear to run errands seems to be a bit too much to me, makes moving freely difficult, and damn hot when in town traffic.
