On the most crowded road I've ever been on, most drivers are doing just fine. There will be a small percentage who I would pluck off the road, never to return.
I'm with vanzen in that I want the driver training/test to minimize the incidence of those drivers who make the road dangerous by their bad driving habits. I can tell you for certain that many people do not know driving laws. When I'm in the left turn lane on my bicycle and someone yells at me to "learn the law", that tells me that we have work to do. It is work that is entirely feasible and reasonable. It would save lives.
Does that have anything with how people drive in other countries? For me, the answer is, no. The only thing I'm interested in when it comes to driving practices in other countries is: can we learn from something they are doing better than we are?
They could put me in charge of traffic safety improvement. I would take that job. I would work hard for forty hours a week and not dick around looking at fluff on the computer. I want to be Traffic King. There would be fewer drivers on the road in a very short time. A lot of people would be taking the bus. The phrase "driving is a privilege and not a right" would not sound empty if I was Traffic King. One more thing about me being King: Cops would be trained to understand that tickets are a tool for public safety and not a fund raising ploy. If a municipality needs more money, they can use another method but traffic safety would be taken seriously and not be used to raise funds. This, I could go on and on about. OK, I already have? I mean for lots longer. But I want to go spend some time with Gretchen.

great replies to this thread. Jarrad's Law will, I think, affect the motorcycle climate in America from now on. this is just the beginning. One thing I wouldn't mind seeing is staggered licensing similar to England. Why? Small bikes would increase in popularity. I also think that forcing new riders to spend a little time on little bikes would allow for skills to grow before they step up to bigger, faster bikes. One unseen benefit resulting would be 2 fold...1, new riders would ultimately be better riders meaning fewer crashes, deaths & suffering....2, it would weed out a lot of poser wannabe pseudo bikers who couldn't possibly stand being seen on something other than that big bad freedom machine they want resulting in...fewer poser wannabe pseudo bikers

, and fewer crashes, deaths and suffering. I've got my fingers crossed....
OH! the comment I made about my motto being "catch me if you can" regarding dealing with car drivers in traffic....
I didn't mean just go faster. a combination of skills is required to avoid trouble, sometimes travelling faster than the surrounding traffic
IS the safest method. But "catch me if you can doesn't always mean go faster. After about 17 yrs and a few hundred thousand miles under my belt I've only been taken out by one car ever. I consider that crash my fault in the fact that it was the one time my vigilance wavered and I left myself vulnerable, I was going the speed limit. reflecting now I think if I'd been paying attention I could have dodged that left turning pick up truck. Maybe not but I'd like to think I can do better...
see you on the road.

Ms. Gifford. There's your dreamer. She asks motorists to "pay attention" while driving. What?!? Hasn't she been in a modern car? You don't have to pay attention in them. You won't get hurt if you hit something. It just isn't fair to expect people to pay attention while they drive. They have more important and/or more entertaining things to do!
Chuey
PS Terrible what happened to her and the others. I hope she has a complete recovery.

Me too. She's one of us, or at least she has been (photo montage lifted from ADVRider):

Too bad she didn't have that AK-47 with her the other day - the sicko would've been outgunned.
