A lucky escape. I've seen some teevee documentaries on North American bears. Fearsome creatures, and clever too. Nothing like that in Oz, apart from the aforementioned australians, who can be a little unpredictable when cornered in the wild.Zombie Master wrote: I was camping near Banff Alberta a few years ago, on the Spray lakes. Incredible place. Very rugged high mountains. I woke up and peered out to see what the day was like, and spotted a full sized Griz a few hundred yards away, which means I was his if he so desired. They run faster than a race horse. There I was zipped up in my sleeping bag like a sandwich in a baggie. I was really scared, so I slowly and quietly unzipped my bag, found my bike key and still naked, turned down the fuel petcock, engaged the choke, and put the key in the switch. I was ready to ride away naked! I slowly got dressed and into my riding gear even though I hadn't packed up my camping equipment. The Silverback just ignored me as I got ready to escape. It could have been ugly, but I left enthralled.
Ah, of course. I was forgetting about our wonderful salties. They have a particular liking for german tourists, I believe. I've also heard that it is advisable to take a dog with you if you wish to swim. I have yet to make it up to the Northern Territory. Everything down south seems so benign.Sibbo wrote:About the only possible comparison in Oz is sleeping beside a river in the North of the country ...saltwater crocs can be every bit as dangerous as grizzlies I'd say .I've seen some beauties in the wild ...I wouldn't like to have them after me .
Nice tent Sibbo, got this one down on my possible buy list.Sibbo wrote:Jeff ,I bought one of these recently .It's very good quality , light and small .I'm entirely happy with it .Bivouac offer free freight to the US for it too .http://www.bivouac.co.nz/gear/camping-a ... -tent.html

Actually this one is sometimes described as a 2/3 size , by big blokes any way .ME 109 wrote:Jeff, I think you'll find the smallest they come in is 1 man.boxertwinjeff wrote: so I think a 2/3 man would be the practical choice.
