If in doubt, read the instructions - they even give you a picture of the protective equipment necessary to perform the task safely, and show you where to put your hands and feet:

Even so I've had to replace/repair three stands (actually every stand on every big airhead I've owned except for the ride-off stand that came on my 100/7) because of broken tangs.
