I've seen very good comparable boots for a lot less.

I forgot that the prices I see on items in Sacramento at a big outlet might be unavailable to you. Like living in Tahoe, part of the joy of living somewhere beautiful.

What I'm looking for from my boots is ankle protection. Even small get-offs have put friends of mine on crutches for months. I have the Sidi ones that have ankle stiffeners similar to what ski boots have. They are not good for walking. The boots that vanzen showed sure look good. I wonder if they give that hyper extension protection?

Walking comfort vs. support is always a bit of a give and take.

I keep a pair of shoes at each of the two main job sites I go to. My Sidi boots aren't too bad to walk in but I walk a lot on the job and I'm not wearing out a $350 pair of Sidis on the job. Mine are the On Road style, with Gore Tex and they are waterproof. I don't know anything about armour ratings for them. They have some.

There seems to be 2 main basic designs for road boots.

1. Where they have an opening/fastening to the inside or outside of the step.
2. Where the boot opens bilaterally so the shin guard falls forward. They're fastened both sides.

Are there others I'm missing?

Then there are fastening systems.
Zippers
Zippers and velcro flaps.
Zippers, buckles.
Laces.

Then there's protection from damage and water...ankles, shins, height of boot comes in here too.

Options allow preferences to develop.
I like them uncomplicated and easy, so the zipper with velcro & leather flap on the inside of the leg is my preference.
Buckles would presumably add more strength to the closure, but it seems too complicated for my liking. The BMW Santiago boots are an example. But then, they're more designed for off road I guess. Maybe less buckles might be ok?

Amongst us we'd have a very diverse usage, but our favourite safety features wouldn't vary substantially. I'm thinking the details added would vary lots though.

So much to consider, and they must be comfortable too.

What I like about Alpinestar Super techs is the way they lace up inside. I always feel more secure in a well laced boot for any application. A bit more work to get on, but when they're done up I feel more secure and supported.

They beat us up on price up here in the Great White North, so I shop for bike stuff mostly in the States. I don't mind paying 15 or even 20% more at home but over that, I start feeling violated, and victimized.


So give it up....and turn it loose.
