Kinda late to this thread, however I just completed adjusting my 1978 R100S sidestand to where it will remain in the down position.

The excrement in my punchbowl was the spring attach tab had a bend forming a tab that prevented me from rotating the attach bracket. A long draft and careful love from a ball peen hammer fixed that. I'm not particularly altitude-challenged with a 32-33 inseam but the location and self-retract sidestand was formerly a bother.



The yellow arrow points out the "modified" spring attach bracket. It has been bent -using a long drift and hammer- away from its normal position; that being snug against the chassis and preventing the fix. After moving it and loosening the 19mm motor mount nut, the bracket self-positioned itself when the sidestand was swung down. Don't forget to tighten up that big nut.

THEY still stay down...on my little Yamaha, if you put it in gear with the sidestand down, the engine stops. That's how they did "it".

Which is great, until the sidestand kill switch fails and the engine won't stay running.

Stalled my old Harley at a light - just as the light went green - kick started her, and, with the stand down, approaching a quick left just the other side of the road, promptly jumped the curb and laid her down. Not enough damage or blood to be overly concerned, I cranked her back up and on into the topless bar parkin lot. ( topless dancers that is, the bar did have a roof )

Montmill, was my article clear, or more confusing than it should be? I haven't read it in years and have had no feedback at all. Maybe because nobody else has read it either:-)

For me, it would be fine to have the "auto-retract" feature. The difficulty I have is that the stand is too far forward. I can't actually get the stand deployed all the way when I'm sitting on the bike. I did criticize the upward reaching prong solution but it actually addresses that issue, although at the expense of uncluttered design.

I had a 1997 Moto Guzzi 1100Sport and that bike had a very nice and hearty stand.

I know of at least two people that have read your article: Mike Crenshaw -my Airhead friend, fellow trouble maker and cook at this year's Big Cedar Rally, and me myownself.

You're welcome to the photos if you'd care to include them plus the note about the need to slightly mod the bracket. The BMW-modified sidestand attach bracket with the "anti-rotation" tweak was a very minor issue to overcome.

I usually do that.
However, when the bike is fully loaded, it's imperative to use the sidestand first 'cause you can't get your leg over the gear on the seat and hold the bike up safely.
