Thanks for your post. I've saved it to my computer just in case I take leave of my senses and ever decide to remove and replace that Bendix it in the future. And the temptation will be there if the starter would otherwise be discarded and replaced. Nothin' much to loose y'know. (except perhaps one's own sanity.)

Well I just used it and it worked a treat!!!
I chamferred/bevelled the ends of the spring clip AND the complete circumference that leads into the retainer. The edge that prevents it from coming out is unchanged.
Some oil, flat washer a Visegrips squashed it in, but not quite "home". With the grips removed I used a puller behind the clutch thingy and on the end of the shaft. It didn't take much for it to snap in place.
The irony is that I did all this and decided, as Ken did, that changing the bushings loooked like a nightmare and they were not bad at all.
