Easy to avoid Melbourne traffic if it comes to that. I live three kms from the green fringe.
So up the hill from Bright, (one of the best rides in Oz, but only 30ish kms )turn right up the top a few kms before the warm pig, but that last bit is definitely worth the gas!. Ride the rear brake for 60kms, and you're there!

I am still waiting for my round trip air ticket to Oz so that I can mess up all of those great bikes.

My news is that Brunhilde's 'reconditioned' gearbox has shat itself. It's a '74 build box that I bought to replace the tired and grumpy original '73 build box about 40k kms ago. It has always been a bit noisy but recently started CLACKING. Opened it up and found:



Two dogs broken off the sliding gear on the intermediate shaft but only one dog found in the bottom of the box. Parts are unobtainium for this vintage. I do have the original box and will be opening that up to see what the innards are like. The good news is that Mal of Dubbo is sending me his spare box to keep me going, so I will be attending all events on the calendar. Thanks, Mal of Dubbo.

Spare gearbox will be pillion and there by Sat eve Charlie.
This will make packing very interesting, its never been my forte'.
Might have to forego some undies to make room.

Well, Mal made it to Bethanga, with a spare gearbox riding pillion. We had a fine night with Jeff and George contributing. Here's Mal on his way to Melburg to meet up with Jo and get on the boat to Tasmania.



I installed the gearbox but when it came to completing the drive train I found that the pinion nut on the final drive was loose. It should be torqued up to 150-165Nm but there has to be a means of holding the splined bit here:



I'll be looking for an old drive shaft to cut up so I can make a suitable BMW Special Tool. Wish me luck.

Couldn't you mount a wheel to it and secure it from turning with straps, then torque?
