Do yo pass on double solid lines?
I do, regularly. But only when it's safe to do so and ONLY if there are no cops around. I my youth I thought that the strip of pavement between the double solid lines was specifically reserved for motorcycles but close calls and maturity have taught me that it's not always.
It seems like the people that decided where these lines would be painted were driving a 1972 Gremlin with a burnt valve, loose tie-rods and 4 mismatched bald tires; If I can't pass on this strip, nobody else can!

My illegal passes are always done in a safe manner, and NEVER in view of a blue meanie. I don't know anyone who has ever been fined for this behaviour in the absence of the policia.
I was once spotted cutting back into my lane after an illegal but safe pass over a double line by an oncoming yet still far away unmarked cop. His grille lights lit up immediately as he pulled over to do a U-turn and intercept me. I stopped right away (almost even with him) instead of having him chase me down just because I felt like it. I lie-ed-ly explained to him that the motorist I had just passed was seemingly having car problems and had moved over a bit and waved me by. I explained that I could have passed the troubled (but luckily now long-gone) motorist without crossing the double-yellow but I deemed it safer to give him some extra leeway while passing.

I didn't get the ticket, just a stern warning to never do that again front of a traffic enforcement officer.

Once in a while, on the bike or in the (very fast) cage. Generally on something like Hwy 1 if the slowpoke has driven right past a 'turnout.' Only with good sightlines, up to and including around the canyon to check for oncoming traffic.

I spent some time in Vermont years ago, where DY passes were legal because of all the farm equipment. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I do it sometimes. I judge more by my sight line than the road line. Sometimes I wish I had more horsepower though.

be very careful crossing the double line, I admit to easing around oil field and farm equipment, south of town here we've had a dozen wrecks and 3 or 4 killed in the last 5 years from cars passing on the same hill, we don't have many curves here in central Okla, but small hills will get ya!

I've encountered a couple of trial road marking experiments in rural areas of Victoria (Oz). There's a long trial section on the Omeo Highway with very long single white 'dashes', signed as "Overtake only when safe to do so". Another stretch out of Beechworth has two centre lines, dashed but with about 1 metre between them, also signed as above. Seems like a positive move to me.

My favourite roads don't have any road markings. Or traffic.

That's how I look at it too.

The laws in my jurisdiction make allowances for crossing double yellows "when required" for access to or from a driveway (in rural areas, when safe).

I also take the calculated risk to cross double yellows to safely overtake exceptionally slow vehicles & farm equipment. In these instances I'd be comfortable arguing in a courtroom that passing was a lesser danger than remaining behind said obstacle (due to the hazards of being rear-ended, or falling debris, etc).

Like others, my definition of what "when required" means was much looser when I was younger...
