Hey All,
I bought a 3/4 seat from a guy who claimed he brought it over from Germany to fit an 88 RS, but at a quick glance it looks like it will not fit. Anyone know if this is true or are the 3/4 seats only for dual shock bikes?

Well I guess just because it was painted pearl with the blue pin stripes I figured it must be for an 88 Well that and the guy I bought it from told me so...lol oh well it looks great hanging on the garage wall near the bike; no one has to know it doesnt fit.
Thanks for confirming my fear.
Pete
PS is there a way to modify something to make it fit??

I'm thinking it would be as 'simple' as adapting a twin shock subframe to your mono. It is, after all, the part that the 3/4 seat mounts to. I suspect the design and fabrication effort wouldn't be totally difficult. Are you carrying bags? Some adaptation would be needed there too. I wonder how the sub-frame to fender interface will work out too.

But wait, there's more! Now you will have to find a matching twin shock dual seat and cowl to fit that twin shock subframe to hang on the wall when your 3/4 seat is on the bike.

Hmmm . . . . . . On the other hand--Those 3/4 seats really do look good hanging on the wall. I can't think of any other hanging BMW part that would get more attention. The ambiance it creates in your man cave is priceless. Well, OK, not priceless.

Most anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Interesting photos. The first thing that caught my eye was that the seat to rear of tank junction didn't really match up very well. Looks like the curvatures aren't alike.

The second thing that caught my eye is the 4 bolts in the 3/4 seat nacelle, two in the forward lower skirt and two in the "handhold" recesses in the cowl part of the seat. This suggests to me how it was done. The stock subframe was likely modified by adding 4 tabs, and the 4 bolts screw into the tabs.

Looks like a decent way to do it. Unfortunately if you were to do that to a stock bike you would have to unbolt the cowl to get at the battery, the tool tray, and the clips that mount the rear of the tank.

Imagining the situation a bit more, It strikes me though that the bolt holes in the cowl would quickly wear out if they had to bear the riders weight. So there must also be something under the seat and cowl that will actually do the weight bearing. Maybe the rubber bumpers on the seat pan work out OK for that. Or custom bumpers could be added as required. Still, I would wonder if the 4 bolts would beat up the cowl through normal riding wear and tear.

The stock setup for the regular and 3/4 seats is a bit different. The cowls are connected to the seat pan and they are just along for the ride with no significant stress being put on them. If I'm right about the 4 bolts serving t locate the seat, that looks like a more demanding requirement.

So Pete, you willing to drill holes in that pretty 3/4 seat and weld tabs onto your subframe?

Pete,
Send the seat to me, I'll pay the postage, and I'll see if it will work on my twin shock before you spend money/time to put it on yours. If it won't work for you,we might be able to work out a pay plan.
