Crossover Pipe

I'm working on a '73 R60/5 and came across this crossover pipe. As you can see the end is larger than the stub on the exhaust. Someone had wrapped metal tape on the stubs to increase the diameter to make it kinda, sorta work. But it obviously isn't correct and leaks.

I'm replacing with the correct pipe but wanted to ask if this was from a different model. Maybe this was specific to the 40mm exhaust system on late 70's R100Rs's???

Thanks,

I'm no expert, but I'm stumped. I've never seen a flared one.

BMW only lists one part from 1970 through 1984 (18111230638), without exceptions for S, CS, RS, RT, etc., so the ones on the larger pipes are the same (as you'd expect them to be).

I'm interested in this, too, just for the sake of knowing.

Is it possible that the PO took the crossover to an exhaust shop and had the ends flared using one of the machines they have?

The current owner bought it that way (over twenty years ago), so possibly the original owner might have done so.

Funny, because I don't see a reason to have it flared, as long as it was the correct pipe to begin with.

I don't think it's a stock BMW part. All of the '69 to '84 machine I've seen don't have flared joints and do have seperate clamps to tighten them. Perhaps from an aftermarket system?

The EPCO exhausts used the welded on "clamp" It looks like it may be stainless steel. EPCO made S.S. systems. I have 38mm Epco headers on my 81 R100RT and they are NOT like that on the ends.
