i have developed a very slight oil leak on the gear seslector on my 1974 R75/6, i noticed some oil on my boot, i cleaned oil from the gear selector, after about a week it was back, as i said very minor leak, so probably a winter job to fix, but any insights woudl be apprecaiated.

You can lean the bike to the right and pull the gear lever. More than likely, the seal has failed.

Seal: P/N 23 12 1 451 027 SHAFT SEAL - 16X24X6,5 (to 09/74)

No, just remove the gear change lever and pry out the old seal. check the seal surface on the lever is burr free. Some of us polish that surface with 600 or 800 emery cloth before installing. Over 20 years on my current seal with no weeping. ('74 R90s)

brillient, thanks, just to clarify when you say lean the bike over to the right, is that right onto its side or do i prop it up, how much of a lean is needed?

Not too far of a lean is needed. A tad further than what it does on the sidestand...in the other direction.

If you get a lump of 4 x 2 (timber) and place it strategically, it is quite easy to lower the bike over so that it rests quit happily on the right rocker box cover. Quite stable and steady for most work.

AS others have noted, not much. Once on a tour, my buddy's R90s developed a leak at the lever. We leaned it over to the right just off center as we used a picnic table bench to hold the right cylinder, and removed the lever. Since we were out in the middle of nowhere, we improvised a fix by wrapping the lever with a few wraps of electrical tape to increase the shaft diameter slightly. Cleaned the seal, installed the lever and it was leak free for the rest of our 2,000 mile journey.

I'm not proposing that as a fix, just embellishing on a good ride memory.
