In-line ignition tester on a '84 RS

I'm resurrecting my '84 RS after several years of indoor storage. Tank is cleaned; carbs are rebuilt. In a few days I'll attempt a start-up. As a matter of following this forum for many years, with this year and it's electronic ignition, I've read NOT to turn over the engine without the plugs and plug ignition wires installed (like one CAN do with older airheads with conventional ignition); doing so may cause ignition damage.
If needed, I'm assuming this inline ignition tester is safe to use on the RS when cranking over?

The spark plugs don't have to be installed. It's safe to crank the engine over as long as the metal hex (threaded part) of the spark plug is resting on the head fins. Not sure if your tester is safe and it won't test the cap and plug anyway. Better to just visually check for spark at the plug electrode.
blue spark = good
orange or no spark = bad
A darkened room is best for this.

Remove the plugs, make sure the metal body of the plug is grounded to engine metal and the lead is connected. Spin the motor on the starter. Alternatively. leave the plugs in and use spare plugs grounded... no need for any gizmos. It's also easier to judge the heat of the spark if you're looking at a plug.
