R80/7 Reattaching Transmission

Hi all,

Can anyone advise how to properly tighten the nut that forms part of the top right hand connection between the engine and transmission? It fixes into the stud from the engine and sits under the right hand air filter cover. I cannot seem to access it with normal or offset spanners, let alone a socket. Picture should help.

Thanks in advance!

Jon

Is the nut you are using 13 mm across the flats? In which case you will be lucky to get it tight! That nut is a 8mm thread with a 12mm spanner size from new and the ring spanner provided in the tool kit or any 12 mm thin ring will fit. If you haven't got one try and get one while you still have some skin on your knuckles!

German vehicle 8mm thread nuts and bolts are mostly 13 mm wrench size.
Japanese vehicle 8mm thread nuts and bolts are mostly 12mm wrench size.
Not sure why.

Yes, it should be a 12mm wrench head. I have some box end 12mm wrenches that fit and some that don't. And yes, you'll get barely 1/12 of a turn in the space available. Also watch for the airbox half to be squirming around as you tighten it. I usually have a rubber mallet on hand to make minor corrections as I tighten the nut.

That’s great, thank you all. Yes, the nut I am using is 13mm across the flats, which explains it. I’ll get looking for a 12mm. Thanks again

Update: Problem solved.

I couldn’t find an M8x12mm nut at home and was loath to buy 100/pay postage. 20min with a Dremel and some sandpaper converted an M8x13mm nut to an M8x12mm nut. Thanks again for the help. Photo added mainly to show off new fuel hoses

Any repair shop or dealer that works on Japanese cars has tons of those nuts laying around.

ps. Please tell me that those un-professional gas line clamps just temporary...
The proper metric size gas hose doesn't need clamps.

Interesting point. My bike had them on when I acquired it last year so I assumed that I should replace them when I replaced the fuel line (with proper metric line). I read that with ethanol fuels (10% here) clamps are a sensible precaution in case the fuel degrades the lines. What would you do?
