Is Something Missing on my /5?

I just brought home a 1973 R75/5. On the rear of the bike there is what appears to be a mounting plate just below the license plate with two holes positioned vertically. I'm thinking that maybe a reflector resided there at one time but I don't know. Could someone help me figure this out, and if something belongs there, where can I get one? Thanks much.

In order to comply with US standards at the time, a reflector was placed there. In Europe, this area allowed for the larger license plates.

I would think that Bob's BMW, Hucky's BMW and the like would have them. You could even try one of the salvage yards like Airhead Salvage south of Austin, Texas.

Welcome to the forum Ray.

Those two holes will almost certainly be for a rear reflector. My /6 and /7 bikes have it. I don't know if the reflector on the /5 bikes is the same or not.

If you want to pick up something used eBay would be a place to monitor. Alternatively you could place an ad in the wanted section if the IBMWR want ads (Internet BMW Riders). I reckon those reflectors (and rubber base which you probably need) will be available from various parts suppliers, including BMW itself. Likely some others will be along and reccommend their favorite suppliers.

And it's even possible that somebody will post the relevant part of the parts fiche giving you an illustration and part numbers.

Editing: I see that Kurt has already posted.

there are a couple of bikes that hace the stock refelectors. They often get removed to clean up the appearance.
