Since I'm cheap, I'm looking for alternatives to the OEM brake shoes that are $123 at the dealer....anyone have suggestions? (something other than "suck it up and pay the $123!!")

About five years ago, I had vintage brakes do my brakes, front and back, including drum turning and shoe arcing. The brakes were certainly much improved, but this was not the "cheap" route.

I have now worn through my front shoes and am ready for a relining. I talked to Mike at Vintage Brake about having them do it, but the wait time from him is too long for me (months).

So, I plan to do it myself. I looked into the Benchmark Works solution (see their website), as well as the Vintage Brake version. The later is much more elaborate, involving curing the shoes in the oven. I plan to follow the Vintage Brake method, using their compounds.

Benchmark sells new aftermarket replacement shoes for $60.

I am also interested in further improving my brakes and may make a set of longer levers for the drum.

I never thought of making new ones from scratch. I was thinking of cutting and extending the existing ones.

Northwoods Airheads sells shoes for a decent price. They are Lucas (i think) which is what Siebenrock also sells.
