1100 spine lube

I'm new to the club and in the process of buying a 96 1100rt with 80k on it. I understand that's a recommended mileage to pull the trans and grease the spine parts. From what I've read it's an 8 hr dealer repair to the tune of about $800 to $1000. I'm a mechanical guy is there someone who can help me through the process via internet if I decide to do it myself.
It would be nice to have suggestions from someone who's done it on what parts I might need and special tips to make things easier.
Thank in advance - Rod in Crescent

Hey, Rod. I've got about 55k on my '96, so I've been thinking about this issue approaching myself. There are VERY few Oilhead owners on this site (that's why it took this long for anyone to notice and respond to your post), so there's probably better places to look for help, like perhaps ADVrider or bmwsporttouring.com. Someone on BMWMOA suggests the instructional DVD available here:

I know nothing about that DVD, so I'm not endorsing it myself, but there's a guy on this string that says he found it very helpful for when he did the splines on his R1100:

For $20, it might be totally worth it.

There are some spline lube and clutch replacement for the oilheads on this site. He's using an R1150 RT as the subject, but I don't there's not much difference between the R1100 and R1150 to the best of my knowledge. You may need to search through all of his videos to find the right one.

I have no affilation with the poster nor the accuracy of the info, but the videos for the spline lube on an airhead were good.
