Hi,

This is my first post.

I have just bought a BMW R80 mono. I'll get around to putting some pics up soon
Its been customised a little already toward a cafe racer style but with a 2 up seat.
Its a naked bike but I am keen to fit some kind of small bikini type fairing to help with touring.

I wanted to know if anyone has done anything similar or recommends anything. This one from FlatRacer.com looks like the sort of thing I'd be keen on. Has anyone fitted these before?

That is the exact same fairig I have on my 1977 R100S. It's small and somewhat crude, but with a little work it can be made pretty good. I was able to color match and trim it so at first glace it looks authentic. I was able to make a bracket to mount a clock but no room for the standard volt meter. A few cans of paint and a pinstripe kit made pretty economical installation. Keep in mind, the only mouting points are the two side headlight shell bolts. If you have a ignition in the side of the shell you need to fabricate a modified bracket but mine only took about five minutes. If you realize it's a budget job, you will be okay.

Make sure you measure the diameter of your headlight and the diameter of the opening on the fairing. Several BMW's are not compatible with that fairing. Also as mentioned above,does it come with mounting brackets? You may have to fabricate them.

How about a second hand BMW S fairing? Or for that matter, a purpose built aftermarket one.

An S fairing might be a good choice.
The stock mounting hardware, however,
may not work on a mono R80.
S fairing hardware was designed to fit earlier models
fitted with smaller diameter fork tubes ...

Do not expect much touring weather "protection"
from either (your choice or the S).
Both are designed to improve aerodynamics
rather than rider comfort.

The fairing you show is for a 7 inch headlight. Beside Vanzen's comment, the fairing, even used is very very expensive if it's in any kind of good condition.
I like mine because, with Euro bars, I find the wind is more stabilized and less buffeting........but certainly does you no good in a storm.
Final analysis, it's a matter of appearance.

A stock BMW S fairing would surely work on a R80 Monolever, but a custom mounting scheme would have to be invented. I'm only familiar with S fairings on the /7 series bikes, which have different front forks from the monolever bikes. The upper S fairing brackets mount to the upper triple tree, which is, of course, differnt on the monolevers. The lower part of the S fairing straddles the fork turn signal stalks (with some associated mounting hardware). The monolever turn signals are mounted differently.

There would be a way cool way of mounting a S fairing to a monolever, and that would be to modify a RS or RT frame mouunted fairing bracket, which bolts to the front of the steering stem. Since that bracket would have to be modified to fit the S fairing a person could probably source a used bent one for cheap. There are a lot of them around since it doesn't take much of a bash on a RS or RT fairing to bend the bracket. What makes this installation so cool is that the now frame mounted S fairing aerodynamic forces would go to the frame rather than the front forks, promising greater stability and resistance to cross winds.

The Givi A210 does a good job, with better protection than a S type.

It is neat and unobtrusive and fits to the headlight bolts in five minutes.

Combine it with a set of hand protectors from a GS and you wont need much more.

With a Drimmel and sanding wheels you can make many fairings fit. It's the bracket fabrication that sets most people back.
There are some universal brackets out there or you can modify the brackets off an RS. The Ducati 900SS fairing look real good on these bikes.
This is what I did with a second hand Yamaha OW31 fairing. Mine works pretty well at keeping me dry, especially at higher speeds.
