Newbie, ignition switch & R75/5 SWB Battery

Hi.
I am a newbie and will quickly introduce myself and I have a battery question for SWB R75/5 owners.

Ive just bought an R75/5, that needs a little work. My last bike, for 30 - 40 or so years, was an old vintage outfit so I am a little in awe of the R75/5's power and sophistication. I'm not mechanically minded rather at the tinkering level.

SteveD put me on to Boxerworks and its been good. Today I installed an ignition lock, thanks mainly to info on the subject posted last year. To be honest I'll find out tomorrow if it was a good idea or not when I connect up the battery. (It was a bit tight in there). Apart from that, my only regret was not to shape the new ignition cover to the curve of the headlight so it sat better. It didnt occur to me until after I bent in the tabs and I really wasn,t keen to muck about with them.

My question to R75/5 owners is what battery do they use? The battery that is in the bike is 170mm long and I can just get it out undoing some of the frame bolts. The recommended battery (..51814) is 186 mm long and even though it will fit in the cradle I cant see it getting past the frame. Would be interested in what battery other R75/5er's use

Another Ozzie! Good to see, and welcome Ian.

The trick to removing the battery is to have it tilted backwards before pulling it out. The subframe widens towards the rear of the battery position. These days smaller batteries are available including those new Li thingees and AGM types too.

Welcome to the "home" so to speak.

I suggest doing a lot of reading up on your bike. There are several good websites that deal with your model. I suggest also joining the Yahoo group for the 5United, a /5 group and several who are quite OK, some of whom also post here.

We will always give you an answer, even if we have to make it up. You may depend on us:-)

If you want to go with an AGM battery, try the Odyssey pc680

This is the popular one here in Oz at the moment. I think Jeff and Mal may have them? Ian, David has one in his R1150R.

Yeah, that's pretty nasty. Best price here is just a little over $100.

Thanks everyone. Starter spins but not engaging. Voltage drop 12.5 to less than 9 volts. Hopefully New Battery next weekend will fix, once I figure out what is causing the the fuse to blow every time I put the headlight in!!
Ignition switch fixed but created a new problem. Are all headlights this crowded?
SteveD note the specialised tool to install ignition switch. Worked a treat.

No. From looking at your pic I'd say /6 and /7 headlight shells are more crowded. But this begs the question, where would you rather have the wires crowded?

I think you need to move to a Monolever to get an uncrowded headlight shell.

The /5 is a tidy and sparsely crowded headlight Ian.

You should've bought a /6 if you wanted crowded! The BMW special tool required here is a macgill's forcep.

Or an R65 of any year.
is the G/S /ST considered a Monolever? or just a Monoshock?


And I REALY like my Odyssey PC680 battery. Well worth the money.
