Diverging Diamond Interchange

I read about this in today's paper and took a look online. It's hard to explain what a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) is in words, so the best thing to do is just watch this video.

While there's no known implementation of a DDI in my neck of the woods, it does look like a better set up. Albeit, it will take a little getting used to.

It's coming to Savannah at a tune of $ multi-millions. Hope it's worth the cost. I should be happy, Georgia is spending money on a road not in Atlanta.

All you need is a good ol' roundabout.

Just went through one of these at Moana and 395 in Reno. It's just like the one in the video except the freeway is raised, so you're under the freeway when you're on the wrong side of the road. It was just a little disconcerting crossing to the wrong side of the road because we'd never seen one before, so we weren't sure what was going on. Once you're familiar with it, it made sense.

I'm not sure how much is gained by changing to one of these, but for new construction, it actually seems MUCH cheaper than the full clover-leaf style interchange.

MS, Reno has a couple of those types of interchange. They work good when you have limited space, like under the freeway. They have really cleared up congestion and gridlock that occurred before, now all vehicles are kept out of the exchange till your turn to go through it.

Would I have gone on that coming west on the interstate, then getting off and going north on 395 last October? I was so stressed out and focused on trying to stay in the right lanes to go where I wanted that I would not have noticed anyway. Man I hate cities.
