Replacing ring gear seal ...

Straight forward question: can I remove and replace the ring gear seal without disassembling the final drive on a 1982 R100 (RS)?
Cheers, Stephen

G'day Stephen. Welcome back.
#1? I believe so. The trick is to avoid damaging the seal when installing it by covering the spline with something that it'll slide over. Use the old seal to drift the new one in. Having written that, I did mine on the bench. The new gasket for the outer cover may require a re-shiming. May.

You're implying you took the the outer cover off: I don't even wanna do that!
Oh, and apologies for not properly re-introducing myself: I have been in hiding after the planned Alaska trip with a friend fell through in 2011. Took me a while to deal with it. Started that RS conversion project in 2012 and am nearing completion.
Cheers,
Stephen

No need to take the cover off.
Get that old seal out without scratching either of the two final drive sealing surfaces.
Maybe a wrap of electrical tape around the spline to protect the new seal on install.
The seal is fairly easy to tap in.
A an easily obtainable quality generic seal will do it, I forget the sizes tho.

It's good to hear from you again here Stephen. Occasionally I've been wondering what you're doing and how you're doing.
