Re: I'm back with more questions 71 R50/5

Found the left side just fine so no adjustment made. On the right side, the side that was apart originally, found too much play in the intake rocker arm. Once I got that where I like it the valve lash was good. First test run and it sounded great. So I'm happy Thanks again Duane your help is much ap...

Re: 71 R50/5 fork oil change

Thanks Duane. Yeah nothing came out until I pulled the other fork nut and pushed up on the stud on the bottom to lift the spring and dampener then it all came out. 7 OZ in the right side and 5 OZ in the left side. I replace it with 10 oz (265 cc) each side. That is the amount the Clymer manual and t...

Re: 71 R50/5 fork oil change

The cap was stuck in the top "nut". I tried to heat the aluminum cap but realized that is the wrong thing as it screws into the top fork nut. So I put it in the freezer for 1/2 hour and it came right apart. So this is a non issue.

71 R50/5 fork oil change

I'm getting ready to change fork oil on the R50 and got the right side upper fork cap off. The left side seems to have spring pressure! Is that normal? I'm getting ready to pull the handlebars off so the cap will come off as it jammed up under the handle bar. Everything I'm seeing in parts fiche and...

Re: I'm back with more questions 71 R50/5

thank you Duane. After reading your very well done link, I think I may have the rocker arm free play a little loose. But I'll know more when I actually open it back up and look. As for the high speed stutter, I could not duplicate it. I'll have to ride it a little and see. I'll measure fuel flow as ...

Re: I'm back with more questions 71 R50/5

The quiet side was never disassembled. I did check torque on that side, using a couple of foot pounds under max and they were tight. As I remember the valves were loose as well and I set them. I'll of course check both sides and adjust as necessary. Don't get me wrong the valve tapping is slight so ...

thank you for the reminder. I was planning on doing that before I torque the head bolts. When I first put it together I wasn't sure how much play there should be. I was guessing and probably got it on the loose side.

Re: I'm back with more questions 71 R50/5

Cylinder and head were off the bike when I got it in May. I lapped the valves and put it all back together. At that time I used new base gasket, push rod seals, head gasket and valve cover gasket. I let the owner ride it about 100 miles and re-torqued the head bolts and readjusted the valves and gav...

I'm back with more questions 71 R50/5

Hello and I'm glad to be back on the forum as I guess I'm the care giver for a 1971 R50/5 and he needs some minor work. The owner has put about 1000 miles on the bike since I got it running for him in June. Issues now are minor but I don't want to mess anything up. First item is the ignition switch....

Re: New guy going to have plenty of questions

Oh one quick note. My youngest son, 23 years old, rode it for a bit today. He exclaimed "Dad, that is the coolest bike I've ever ridden" I said "Me too". My middle son rode it and was all smiles.. he said roughly the same thing. "That is too cool. Now I want one." Also ...
