Re: Bing's

I have the Bing "alcohol proof" float kit in my 74 R75 and 82 R65. I'm not sure they have done anything extraordinry for me. When I sent my R75 Bings of for a 120000 mile rebuild Bing replaced the alcohol proof floats; one of them had gotten heavy. The "alcohol proof" kits replac...

Re: 1982 R65 Rear Brake Shoes

The R65LS rear brake drum on the cast wheel is wider in diameter than the R75/80/90/100 rear drum. Comparing shoes, you will notice that the arm extending from the shoe portion to the cam is longer than the "big" bikes.

Re: Sargent /5 seat restoration

I have used Sargent for covers and parts; they are very good. Their reputation is very good also. As to different foams in rebuilds, I had Bill Mayer rebuild and recover my /6 seat. With the new foam insert, slightly shaped seat, and leather covering I can go 800-900 miles per day without any probem...

Re: Electronic ignition advance.

And your plugs, plug caps, and wires are all good, right? Other than that, what everyone else said.

Re: Installing /5 reenforced swing arm

The short swing arm /5 had the "short" shocks at 13" as you stated. The '73 and a 1/2 went to the 13.5" shocks as did /6 and later. The 1/2 inch makes very little difference in ride or handling so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. I checked my SJ-braced swing arm (/6) and the b...

Re: Installing /5 reenforced swing arm

Are you slifting the swingarm through a larger arc than the shocks will allow? If memory serves me I wncountered the same problem when I installed my braced swingarm a few years back and finally realized that with the shocks mounted the swingarm will never move up that high.

Re: First BMW

I'll agree with George about the 1974 /6 series reliability. I bough my '74 new. Once the rear main seal was fixed the only other problem I have had was a broken pawl spring in the transmission at 60,000 miles. I bought the bike new and have 140K miles on it. The problems that have occurred have bee...

Re: Wishes for Christmas and the New Year

Merry Christmas, all from sunny and unseasonably warm St Louis - off for a sprint on the LS and later will excercise the R75. Happy and healthy 2012 to you.

Re: Oil pan extension with the cooling tubes

Hi Vanzen Re your note about possible tube blockage and other concerns on the Briel-type extension/tubed "coolers" - I have >90,000 road miles without a blockage, no funny leaks, no longer cooling period or stays too cold in the <40 degree wx. The tubed extender really only adds a quart of...

Re: Oil pan extension with the cooling tubes

I put a Briel oil cooler on my '74 R75 back in 1980. It has more than 100K miles on it now. There is no leakage from the double gaskets. I modified the centerstand dropping the upper cross piece 3 inches or so to clear the extension. There is another quart of oil in the crankase but I'm not so sure ...
