That's AI for you

I just Googled 'airhead driveshaft splines' in relation to a post on another forum. Googles 'AI overview' came back with the following: An "Airhead drive shaft spline" refers to the splined connection on the drive shaft of a BMW Airhead motorcycle, which is a series of teeth on the shaft t...

Re: Tuning.

Probably teaching Grandma but... With airheads you need to set the idle mixture and idle speed with the engine fully warmed through... that's 'ten mile' ride warmed through not 'two minutes in the garage with the engine idling' warmed through. If you don't, the idle will invariably be way too high w...

Re: Krauser - Old Style Flat Latch Keys

HI,
Just to let you know that these keys aren't for BMW supplied 'Krauser Classic' panniers (which use keys marked 'Sudhaus'). They are the type used on the later BMW 'Touring' panniers (The type fitted to the 'RS and the 'RT in my signature pane).

Re: Damage to top clamp from locknut - R100RS

It's very difficult to comment on aftermarket installations without knowing which of the available options have been used. There are several billet top yokes on the market and they don't necessarily use the same clamping arrangements. Do you know which one has been used.

Re: 1987 R100RT overhaul

Before even worrying about the size of your existing bearings, I would check to see if the end float of the crankshaft is out of spec. These bearings seldom give problems unless they are damaged by carelessness or lack of maintenance. Assemble the crankshaft into the crankcase with the thrust washer...

Re: front wheel rotation

Yes, hollow side to the left as fitted but I don't think it really matters. The wheels don't have a 'rotation' mark and they are symmetrical. What will have a 'rotation' mark is the tyre so, if you are fitting a wheel with an existing tyre, it is better to honour the tyre rotation than be too worrie...

Re: Front Fork Seal Replacement 86 R65

Interesting... That would be the spacer ring 31 42 1 458 474... I'm pretty sure my R80RT (same forks) doesn't have them. They aren't shown on the BMW ETK (2002 and 2006 versions) Running a part number search on the part number gives no response. I can't actually see what they would achieve in the po...

Re: Toaster tank on a 1982 R80

I can say with some certainty that it won't be satisfactory without a lot of work. I'm not sure whether the central spine of the tank will clear the brake line manifold and the ECU, I don't think it will. There was a thread on this a few months ago and the consensus seemed to be that it wouldn't. Mi...

Re: 1987 R100RT overhaul

No need for an oil pan extension. The '87 models have a deep oil pan anyway. The extensions were produced mainly for the pre '80 machines which have a much shallower sump and arguably they gave some advantage... although it's debateable whether they are needed in temperate climates. If you want to r...
