The MOA site has a thread going on now about mufflers. It might help.

Unless I'm missing something, the JC Whitney 40mm mufflers for my 1977 R100RS - with 10% discount - are now around $110 a PAIR with free shipping. They'd have to be pretty bad to walk by at that price.

What I've always done is rinse new mufflers out with high-temp paint before use. Seems to double their useful life.

My article fails to have a report on the Emgo mufflers. http://w6rec.com/duane/bmw/muffler/slash5_muffler.htm

If you buy those, please give me a report similar to those on that page.

Others who have used them for years also have great data to send me. Please do, as I will save it for my update................. someday when I get old.

Duane, I believe the J.C.Whitney mufflers mentioned in your article are the EMGOs. They are also sold by Amazon.com, Capital Cycle and other places online. They are cheap and fit well enough, but a friend here on the island is getting rust pitting after only a year of riding.

Yes, you are correct. The JCW mufflers are EMGO's. Currently, they only have the left and the right is out of stock. I was on the phone with them for sometime today trying to figure out why they did not have the right. They said they should be available in 3 weeks or so.

I'd love to know if the EMGO's have the pressed in relief for the brake pedal. The Mac Whispertones, which are currently on the bike do not. The set I have clears the pedal, but the left sits lower on the bike than the right. When I tried to shim the right one down to match the left, it hit the brake pedal.

Sound is per their name. Sounds like a Beemer to me. But I'm new to owning an airhead. They appear to be made well, from a durability POV. Rear bracket is welded on, rather than bolted. Believe EMGO's bracket is also welded on.

Rob
