I did the voltage regulator adjustment on the bench but I can see it would be much quicker doing it on the bike once you knew what was needed.

I remember Variacs well, they were a standard piece of kit at apprentice training school. I haven't seen one for years but apparently Variac are still in business turning out basic variacs and some fancy ones with digital voltage displays.
