I recently inherited an '84 R100RT from my Dad. I'd love to restore it. I've been riding bikes all my life and I have some mechanical experience, but I must admit that the BMW platform is hard form me. I'd love some guidance. My main concern right now is that the low beam and tail light and licenses plate light to not illuminate while the bike is running, but they do function when the ignition is in "park." I read somewhere that this is due to a faulty ignition switch. Does that sound valid? I'm also having a hard time finding the air filters that mount directly off the heads (I'd like to eliminate that bulky box under the seat). I'm also struggling to find parts any guidance you guys can give me would be great.

K and N might be a source for individual air filters. However, my experience is not to get caught in the rain as the engine will ingest said H2O.
The tube from each carb to the existing filter chamber helps to secure the carbs to the head. Also, there is some thought that such a mod can affect power and fuel milage.

Motobins in the UK is a good source for parts ( not sure where you live) Great website and lots of spares at good prices. I would leave the air filter sysstem as is, for good reason. Hopped up motors and fair weather bikes may benefit, but for all round riding the stock sysytem is best. Does restoration mean cosmetic or are you thinking extensive mechanical and electrical overhauls ? Finding an experienced R-series mechanic is a great help if the bike is a whole new ball game. Yep, the pods are less secure. One big backfire and ...I guess they could blow off. Importantly though, power might be mildly compromised through the range.

Yeah, pods are not as effective as a well designed airbox for anything other than peak rpm. In the midrange, they can't compete. That's what designing an airbox is all about: maximizing usable midrange power.

BMW's are designed to run long and efficient with stock exhaust and air intake. Start changing that and you get a lesser machine. Get the electrics sorted out and ride it. Its not a Honda or a Harley.
