BorS, as an alternative to fixing up the fork/brakes you already have, you can change to a later model fork with Brembo brakes. It would be a very easy change. It would not change the character of the bike. Just one more idea.
Also, the crash bars are controversial on this site because some people think they will not slide as well as the rocker covers if you are in a crash. It has been said that the rocker covers are made to withstand the abuse. The small diameter of the tubes (crash bars) can more easily catch on the road and flip the bike up in an unpredictable way.........as if anything that happens in a crash is predictable. I choose to not use crash bars. I do feel that most designs could catch.

The crash bar can also help to bend the bike frame, that's why I prefer not to use them

And besides the potential high sides and bent frames a 2nd hand rocker cover is cheaper than a new set of crash bars.

The only really good reason to have crash bars is so you have somewhere to mount highway pegs - so you can stick your feet wide apart way in front of you.
