Ignition switch problem

Post by Bobby »

Hi after removing my RS fairingand fitting S bars ( soon S fairing) and moving the Key ignition to left side of headlight. After riding it i turn the key off ( has no kill switch) and the bike doesnt turn off, the dash lights just dim a little. I then stall the bike if i restart it with out giving any throttle, it will then turn off with the key, but if i start it then rev it some it again wont stop with the key.

Any ideas?

I'd be double-checking the wiring to the ignition switch. Do you have a wiring diagram for your year model?

Hi Airbear, sorry for the late reply. Yes i have checked the wiring with the diagrams in my haynes manual and i also took a picture of the wiring on the ingnition before i moved it from the RS fairing to the headlight. Its the same as before i moved it. The bike is a 77 r100/7 but at some stage has been built into an RS with the 79 blue silver with orange and white pin striping.
The ignition switch works fine to turn the bike off, if i start the bike and just let it idle. But if i rev the bike over around 3k, then it wont turn off, the ignition lights go dimmer and flicker a bit and the idle goes up a little when turning the key off. So i then stop it buy stalling it. Start it up again dont rev it and it turns of with the key no prob.

This problem comes and goes aswell. A week after this started the generator or alternator light stayed bright and wouldnt go out when riding or reving it ( but the bike was turning off with the key, even after revving it or riding it hard). I checked with multi meter, wasnt charging. I pulled the regulator off and my electrical minded mate opened it up and noticed the small points like part wasnt smooth, had built up a small point from spark arcing. So i sanded it as flat as i could put it back together and now the the regulator seems to work fine, the light goes out when reving it and it is charging.

But now the ignition wont turn the bike off again after reving or riding it. I not sure if this is all a coincidence or what, the bike turned off fine when the ignition was in the RS fairing.

Any Ideas. I read it could be the headlamp relay, but i have replaced that and makes no diff.

Cheers,
Bob

Take a look at the Boyer site, and there is work around on the site, or alternatively google Boyer troubleshooting

Some earlier Boyers did this on BMWs.
