Well I've made one so far. On the bench with a trannie in neutral and no oil, I can't get it to shift.

https://youtu.be/eZEFVstHv0c explains the method which requires some contortion moving the rear wheel, so I can't experiment with that on the bench.

I expect there'll be some training on "touch" and working out the correct depth to insert the tool.

You can turn the output shaft, which would be doing the same thing.

I did try that, but find that using the tool left handed was awkward. I think I need to work out the correct insertion distance and add a hard rubber stopper at the right spot to allow me to "fix" the position of the tool centrally for more stability. It tends to wander in the hole doing it one handed. The Sipp tool uses a bolt incorporated onto the tool for that purpose.

It would be best to practice using a 'box that has the rear cover and the pawl spring removed so you can see what you are doing. I have the means to do that at the moment, since I have some open boxes lying around. I'll make the tool, set up a box and take some pics.

By the way, here is the culprit in DucatiPete's Turkey box:

The box turned up a couple of weeks ago from Turkey. The bearing is the big one on the front of the output shaft. Sadly, there is some associated damage but some good reusable parts.

Late breaking news: Pete should be back in Oz around October 3. There will be tales to tell at campfires for quite a while, I reckon.

Ohh, that looks a little second hand!

Yep, it'd help to have direct vision. I'm not keen to remove the back cover on this spare, so I'll continue to practice at it occasionally. I'm heading away this w/e so won't get to do much until mid next week. I'll look forward to some pix and measurements Charlie. They'll help immensely in getting the technique right. Interestingly if you look at the first item in this thread and compare the picture of the tool in action and the drawing of the tool, they don't look very identical in measurement. In fact, Bob's tool looks very different to the Winderlich tool, so there must be some leeway for "manufacturing tolerance"! :lol:

It'd be good to listen to some of Pete's stories. Maybe we could do rig up an av show somehow. A small battery operated projector maybe! I might have just the thing!

Btw, Ian (equipo5) has a gearbox shimming/backing plate for a 4 speed. Would that work on a 5 speed box?
