It's an 83 RS, so rear disc.
I think the plan is to waste the caliper bracket so the axle is exposed to a cutting device.
Brackets aren't expensive to replace. Axles probably cheap enough second hand. A rear wheel might be OZ$200 at least I suppose?

Re: Unable to remove the rear wheel.
I have a disc rear axle that I can send your friend, but the trans-Pacific shipping may take longer than he'd like. Let me know.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.
Re: Unable to remove the rear wheel.
Thanks Melville. Very kind. I think he's sourced parts and is awaiting international delivery.

Perhaps borrow something like this...
I've spent most of my money on women, motorcycles, and beer.
The rest of it I just wasted.

Re: Unable to remove the rear wheel.
I had a looky see and there's enough room to get a 5" grinder in there to cut the axle on the left side of the caliper mount. A 1mm cutting disc is the go.

Re: Unable to remove the rear wheel.
The axle was cut at the left-hand side and the final drive and the wheel were removed together.
the left hand bearing came out looking like this.
The two plastic spacers between the bearings melted..

A little disconnect between man and machine! That axle was never coming out.
