2017 Border Run

Grant & me are doing this next weekend. 4500kms return in 4 days for Grant, 4200 for me.

This ride takes us 2/3's across the country, via the remote but well traveled Nullarbor Plain. This meeting at the Eucla Roadhouse started over 40 years ago and is something Grant was keen to try. He's been to the Port Augusta region before but not further west. I've done it twice, but in the '80's. How our bodies hold up will be interesting, but we're not silly enough to consider tenting after 1000km days in the saddle. Beds and showers f'sure!

Days one and two should be fine. Day three will be challenging but a tailwind will help. Day four might just be painful! As long as we don't get too singlemindedly "we gotta get there" on day four we should be ok. From 5-6 days out, even the weather looks like it's improving. Fingers and toes remain crossed.

Grant has night tested his lights and he's happy. I'll check mine out tonight on the way home from work, but they look pretty bright in the shed! The bracket works very nicely Jeff, nice and solid. I added an extension to bring the light forward a tad.

We want to avoid dawn and dusk as much as possible, though day one starts at 0400 for Grant and 0500 for me, to get to our rendezvous point at Calder Caltex.

I expect we'll photo bomb that spot! Maybe not that one exactly, but something similar. The view is only 300metres from the highway, but you can't see it unless you're way over towards the edge.

Yep all will be fine, its not a race but a constant "legal" speed will be maintained over the 4 days. Bed, shower and feed each night will help to nodoubt

I ended up mounting a 55w HID "striker 170" Lightforce spot light on the left side crash bar, this reflector can be twisted around either way to set your desired spot/spread effect, it really fills out the left side a mile. On the ride side Steve and I have the same 35w HID spot off ebay for $43.00 the pair and again it has some distance and punch straight up the middle.
I had the auto electrician use his good voltage tester on all settings and all is within specs and he was happy with everything and remember we both chunked up our relays with a "Eastern Beaver" heavy duty relay etc.

yep it will be a good run of 4500kms, straight but fun to get out there and see that part of the country.

Sounds like you are well prepared, and I know you blokes don't mind a long day's run. There's probably not much chance of the law being out there to check your "legal" speed. Have a great ride, chaps.
