ABS Test
ABS Test
Hello all! I got to test the ABS system on my K75 on Saturday. I was up shifting through the gears when a black pickup pulled out in front of me from between stopped line of traffic. I hit the brakes hard but because I am used to my R100's rear drum, I underestimated the more powerful rear brake on the K. I would have momentarily locked the rear wheel, so ABS works pretty well indeed. Much quieter than auto ABS grind.

Re: ABS Test
I didn't know K75s had ABS. What year is it? Glad it worked!

Re: ABS Test
My K12r has servo assisted abs and I'm yet to experience the abs bit. The servo aspect makes them phenomenal and initially I thought it must be the abs helping until I realised there wasn't any pulsation.

Re: ABS Test
Its a 94 K75ABS. I just bought it a couple of months ago. It had only 680 miles on it. Was stored apparently inside someones house in the Hamptons for 19 years!
Re: ABS Test
ABS on my 1993 K1100RS work great, had a LT before this and similar.. can't fault the feel and process!

Have you ever had it come on? I'm yet to experience the abs work.

Re: ABS Test
I was touring Bosnia on a rented Multistrada 1200. I had a large truck swerve into my lane head on. I attempted maximum braking, and was ready to avoid the head on, in either direction. The ABS kicked in and my brakes released. What a terrible feeling! The truck moved back to his lane. I learned that I could stop in a much shorter distance without ABS. The tires were not even beginning to howl when they released. This was on a clear day with dry pavement. I have seen riders go off the side of a gravel road because they forgot to disable their ABS. In certain conditions ABS can be a life saver, it can also kill you. My KTM 990 SMT has ABS, well I think it does, it has never come on yet. I think there must be a threshold designed specifically for each machine. For a new and untrained rider, ABS can be a safety improvement. For a skilled ride it could go either way....IMO
Any and all disclaimers may apply
Re: ABS Test
No abs on my RS saved my ass a few months ago. I was able to skid the ass end out and pull a radical maneuver around a vehicle that shut the gate on me. Fully loaded RS too. I think frame flex helped me pull it off.

Re: ABS Test
Maybe the BMW ABS is different from KTM and Ducati. I would imagine that they have gotten better. It was a subtle thing, not like the ratcheting on a car ABS. But I knew I stomped the rear too hard and I could feel it just begin to lock and it gave maximum braking without locking. I was impressed with the system. Really did not think I would ever use it as I have had my MC licence for 40 years. The drum on my R bike is much less grabby. I am just so used to that having ridden R bikes for at least 30 years. Oddly though, my R100RS had a rear disk, and you couldn't lock the rear brake no matter what you did!

That's what I used to think too. Amazing what can happen when your life depends on it.
