Very much like that Claude.
I'm thinking of my wood splitter, it has a remote oil filter for the hydraulic ram. I'll go have a look.
The oil lines to the filter would need to have the section of metal pipe like the stock cooler lines have, because it's going to be very close to the header pipe. Should be doable.
I might even be able to use the cooler lines with or without modification, but it shouldn't be too difficult to get something made.

I'm just imagining how much longer a VW engine would last with one of those replacing the stock tea strainer.

Not sure how big that filter is, and whether that size is equivalent to the filter area of the stock paper filter.
And then there's micron size? How fine do auto filters filter?

As to filter size, a standard Ford Z9 is too big, but perhaps the Jeep size is more suitable.
Just had a look at the filter on my kohler mower engine. It's about 3" x 3" Perhaps it will suffice.

Jeff, have you seen BandWagonJumper's (advrider) grey ghost from Northam in WA? Remote filter behind the transmission.

We VW people do that quite regularly. Most recently on my last Kombi. One blocks the output from the pump and uses a pump cover that sends the oil out. Oil then rejoins the case at the main gallery.

The heads and exhaust valves remain the first item to go, but the bottom end bearings don't need replacement at the same time.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

I was thinking about Bluey's setup, but not too keen on having the filter way back there. Mucho hoso!
Noticed the mystic oil filter cover has the in and out vertical. Horizontal would have been better to run both oil lines vertically upwards to the filter. I'll need to get hoses made so I guess they can be made to suit with appropriate elbows.

What I just saw with BWJ's remote filter mount, is that it just looks like a plate with holes for the oil feeds. Simple, brilliant. Make one to suit the filter I choose.
Edit, plate might need a circular trench milled on filter side to provide a freer flowing inlet manifold, depending on how high the filter o ring is.
Looking at filters this am, I can see some with the internal bypass, and also some with anti drain back valve.
Dunno if the situation exists where it could drain back. Spose it's entirely possible seeing I'd have the filter extending as high as the bottom of the tank.
Ideally mount filter upside down, but if finding a capable filter was difficult I could mount it sideways and use a catch container when changing filter.

Many common contemporary cars use tiny oil filters. Some are less than 2" x 2". Go to an auto parts store and ask to look at the selection they have available. I think most use standard NPT threads. It would be relatively simple to machine an aluminum plate to hold one and mount it in your oil cooler circuit. The only problem I foresee is that the cooler circuit is a by-pass; only a portion of your oil goes through it. If for instance, your cooler was blocked solid, your engine would still have normal oil pressure. Also, what do you plan on doing about the cavity the stock oil filter was housed in? You can't just leave it empty. Another issue that might be a problem is that most new cars (with these tiny filters) are designed to use very thin 0W20 or 5W20 oil. Not sure if they are capable of efficiently circulating and filtering the 20W50 molasses airheads use.

Good points, Claude.
With the Mystic non thermostat cover I'm seeing an outlet and inlet. I was thinking the oil must flow through the Mystic radiator all the time?
I was thinking that without a filter element in the oil filter cavity, oil would flow straight out the 'out hole' in the cover, through the remote filter and then back through the 'in hole' in the cover, which joins/seals? up with the long tube in the centre of the oil filter cavity, and onwards through the gallery.
Does the mystic cover even work like that??

I think I could also do it with the thermostat, without a filter element. But it depends how good the seal is between the thermostat, and the centre tube. If it seals well, I think the thermostat housing could take the full flow of oil. The white o ring and shim would still be used. The thermostat 'piston or valve' would need to be permanently pushed into the fully open position by a long bolt, which is what I do in summer anyway.
I think it could be done with the piston removed actually.
All comes down to a good seal between the thermostat housing and the long tube, and if there was a leak at that point it would pass unfiltered oil from the cavity into the tube and on through the gallery.
My RS long tube has notches in the end, maybe that's the bleed off so the cooler doesn't get all the flow. If thats the case, I'd need a tube without notches to fully seal with the cover.
In my imagination, anyway.

Maybe I could use similar to the Z89A from the Chrysler 4 litre six. Not toooo big and handles molasses.

Without going back to read all the detail, is it plausible to just change the oil filter cavity? Would that solve the issue with the spring seat? I'm unsure of the anatomy back there.
