Charger lamp

Post by slyngej »

I installed a motogadget M unit on my bike. Its nice. I removed the starter engine and kickstart it. The ignition output from the m unit goes to the coils instead of start relay. I have no start relay at all.
The power output of the diodeboard goes directly to the battery. The D+ from the regulator which normally goes to the starter relay, goes directly to the charge lamp.
The lamp lights up when the regulator reach approx 13 volts and starts to charge, instead of the other way around, with stopping to light when charging.
How do i get this? By installing a start relay again?

The charge lamp goes out when the voltages on either side of the bulb are equal, meaning there is no current flow. One side of the bulb is basically connected to D+ on the diode board and the other side of the bulb is connected to the battery. I'd try to replicate that circuitry and go from there.

I'm not familiar with the Motogadget unit. I'm also not clear on what you mean by the "ignition output from the m unit goes to the coils instead of start relay". On the stock ignition system, the output of the ignition system doesn't go through the starter relay...as far as I know, the OEM system also powers the coils. The starter relay is just a relay...it lets a low amperage 12v signal latch the relay to direct a large amp flow through bigger wires to the starter solenoid. There are other side functions of the relay...not sure what those are.

I suppose you could simple plug into the bike and see what happens.

Found this video where someone installs the unit on his bike...see what happens there:

It would have helped if the new harness was the correct one for his bike. It's not correct for an '83 but for a '85 Monoshock.
