Occasional indicators.

Post by SteveD »

R100RS 1981.

The indicators work occasionally, maybe 50% of the time. This started yesterday during a 300km ride, maybe 200kms in.
Today, tootling around town, same thing. The switch lever does feel a tad loose, soft detente.

All the bulbs flash ok when working, none at double speed which would indicate a dodgey one.

I thought I might dismantle the switch and squirt some electrical cleaner into it.

Any other thoughts? Bad earth somewhere? Relay problem? Switch on its way out? All else works ok.

I have a 500km ride tomoz so will see what it's like before doing anything when I get home.

Mine has had issues in it's 303K miles. First thing I'd try is spray contact cleaner while moving / working the switch . You can do that with the switchgear still on the bar. If you need to disassemble the switch, it's not that hard, but do it in a clear plastic bag to retain the detent spring and ball.

If the detente is feeling soft it may be worn out. You may find a way to improve it if you take it apart. I miss the switches on my /5's and /6. The were serviceable.

I do think it's probably just worn.
Today they worked ok when at highway speeds but less so when in town. Flicking it the opposite way then to where I wanted seemed to work, sometimes they were self cancelling once they did blink, eg 3 blinks then no more. Bike ran well otherwise.

A spritz of contact cleaner into the switch made it feel better, but still no flashy flashy.

Damn  ...into the headlight again :? . Just happened to have a spare relay amongst a box of electrical bits & pieces. Bosch in, Hella out.

Blinkety, blink, blink! Hope it holds!
