1983 gas cap repair

Post by KeithW »

Has anyone had the gas cap fail & cant get to open. It happened to me yesterday it just spun & did not open. Fix was to pry the lock off and open. Any ideas on how to repair or just buy another one.

Snowbum has a section on stuck gas caps...probably something to have looked at before prying the lock open. Look about half way down the page for the "Ratcheting, unscrewing, re-keying" section:

Take your belt off if you have one and thread it through the handle and pull up with reasonable strength.
At the same time use something with a little weight to it that won't damage the cap. A block of wood or the handle of a large screwdriver.
At the same time as pulling up with the belt, tap the gas cap handle in the direction to undo and you will most likely release the cap.

Motobins hints wrote:Petrol Cap Jammed? This is not uncommon on older Boxers, the cap spinning round but not unscrewing! It can be removed without damage to paintwork by standing on the footrests, and passing a rope through the filler cap handle; tie it into a loop around your shoulders, and heave - the whole cap will pop out easily.

As a side note, never turn the cap until it ratchets.

Saint Matthew of Parkhouse, in the last BMWOA Owner's News column I read, revealed that most late model Euro auto gas caps have the same thread as the screw-in BMW caps. One of his customers replaced his failed BMW moto gas cap ($$$) with a Saab cap for $11!
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.
