That's good! Exactly the lights you should see.
Yes, down for right and up for left on the indicators.
The wires need to be connected to the cap for the Brake Failure light to work.

Re: Newbie electrical help
Those lights look right for ignition on, engine not running. As for the brake failure, probably terminals are corroded. Looks it's a two-wire setup, with one wire going to ground and the other wire getting power from the ignition switch. Also looks like the power comes through the light in the instrument pod. You might have a burned out bulb in the speedo.

OK I have just finished re wiring my 1978 R80/7 and have had to make up some parts of my loom as the cables were rotten and causing voltage drop, first photo on this is easy what you have in your hand is the voltage regulator it is mounted just behind the headstock on the R/H side, ther will be a socket in the loom to match it.danielhowden wrote: ↑Thu Sep 29, 2022 1:35 pm Ah interesting how a conversation brings new things to the issue I am having. I went out and took a couple more pictures.
I have this and I don't know what it is but it doesn't seem to be related to the starter issue.

But this is a rework of the starter relay by the looks of it.

I now see a terminal on the starter relay that is empty and I wonder if the "hot" wire should go there.
The socket you are holding in your hand is for the starter relay and you have a missing wire there that should be part of the Battery + terminal and I believe that is what you were asking as to where it goes to.

To test the Brake Failure light circuit is working with the ignition on remove the cap carefully from the master cylinder and lift the cap up the light should come on, its a warning that your brake fluid is getting low that's all.danielhowden wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 11:36 am Just checking - I've not worked on a BMW before. These lights look right for a stationary engine I think?

On the indicator switch by the throttle is down supposed to light the right indicators?
Lastly, I'm not getting the brake failure light to come on. I understand that if there is no fluid in the reservoir then it should come on, also if the wires are taken off it should come on right? Neither of these options bring the light on and I did check that the bulb was ok.
Thanks.

No problem daz, we are all here to help each other, as I found out myself even though my bike came with a genuine BMW service manual and have also purchased a Clymer version there are things you still fine are missing or vague in the manuals, to add to it what seems in the day when these bikes were made BMW kept changing things.
I have to say thanks to all who have helped me here, the other thing i have noticed how easy it has been getting parts, it us almost impossible to get anything from BMW in NZ but out of the UK and USA no issues whatsoever.
I should post some photos of my progress.

Just trying to finish the electrics. This is the last thing, indicator light is on all the time. Doesn't even flash when the indicators are on. Engine is not running.
Can't see that it should be like that.

Re: Newbie electrical help
Your flasher relay is stuck. It may free up with a little time. I had one parked since 1988 that freed up about 10 minutes after I'd ordered a replacement.
I'm a little concerned with your clutch adjustment. The cable doesn't usually need that much at the lever end.
Similar for the brake. BMW didn't usually put a barrel adjuster at the lever on disc brake bikes. Just under the tank.

Re: Newbie electrical help
Ah ok, do you think it may free up if I leave the indicators flashing for a while?
Yes, good spot for the clutch adjustment. TBH, I can't remember if I can adjust this up at the other end of it's just that the cable is stretched. As for the brake adjuster, this is just what came with the bike. Do you think I should change it?
I'm please with how the bike is coming on though.

Re: Newbie electrical help
This is the best way IMO to adjust the clutch cable:
