Better Airhead RS Mirrors

Post by Bill Smith »

After 38 years on my '84 RS with stock mirrors augmented by stick-on convex mirrors added to the originals, I really want something better. I've seen references to both spacers to go between the factory mount and the mirror, and Japanese mirrors that either fit through the factory mount, or replace the OE mount and mirror with minimal drilling in the RS fiberglass.

So, what would you folks suggest? If the solution is a Japanese bike mirror, make, model and year, please.

Thanks in advance!

What about mirrors from the '87-on RS models? I found this recommendation from another website:

There's a right side as well.

I bought a second pair of OEM mounts and drilled them out for a pair of NLA Napoleon mirrors.
Should have lubricated more while I was drilling as it heated the metal enough to spin in the plastic mount. Put a nut under it.
Done again, I'd due it more slowly with oil cooling. Then tap it with the appropriate threads.

Agree that's well worth looking at. These mirrors were also fitted to 'RT models and the heads will bolt right up to the existing 'RS mounts. They really do make a difference (although they're still not perfect). Ironically, the original 'RS head work well on the 'RT so I now have 'RT heads on the 'RS and 'RS heads on the 'RT.
