hi everyone,
just bought a 1980 R80/7. i am sure i will have loads of questions. first one can i get keys made for the old ignition?

Yes you can just take a key that fits if you have one to a locksmith and they should be able to make a copy, I did the same for my 1978 R80/7.

The 'correct' Nieman blanks can still be obtained from BMW specialists, you'll be very lucky to find them in a high street key cutters shop. There are a number of other blanks that will fit.

Many High Street key cutters will not touch the Nieman blanks because they are steel and some of the cutting machinery won't cope with them. Also some are resistant to cutting blanks from thay have not supplied themselves.

The age specific folding keys are no longer available. There are later folding key blanks that will do the job but don't look quite right (if that's important to you). Many key cutters won't do folding keys because they won't fit in the cutting machines.

The best bet is to find a good locksmith (unlikely to be a high street key cutter) take the key to him, ask him if he can duplicate it. Tell him you can get 'proper' blanks if he thinks it's a good idea. Any good locksmith will be able to supply a key that fits.

The alternative is to cut a key yourself. With a set of warding files and a bit of patience it is quite easy to duplicate the profile of the key.

Could be... in which case, it's a question of whether he has the key code... If so, a key can be cut. If not, it's a matter of taking the complete lock (ignition lock for preference) to a locksmith who will be able to work out the ward sequence and cut a key. The alternative is to buy a complete set of locks.

sorry perhaps not posted the question correctly. No i have no keys. the last 2 days i have stripped the bike down to the frame and lump. so i have the seat lock and the ignition lock off, so i could send to a locksmith. where do you get thigs like cables like throttle, choke clutch ?

I'm not going to list all the parts places online. The following list is just some and there are others. You can get many parts from your local BMW dealer. While more and more parts are becoming NLA, there are some aftermarket parts available outside of the dealership channel.

Since this is (by chance or design) very much and international forum, location can be very important when giving advice especially in the matters of supplies and the differences between EU and US spec machines. I myself am in the UK (Scotland) so many of my suppliers are of little use to anyone in the US and I am most familiar with EU spec bikes.
