R80 charging issues
Re: R80 charging issues
If the battery has been hot enough to melt something I would be very cautious with it. At the very least it's lifespan has been compromised and if the heat wasn't caused by overcharging which would seem not to be the case, then the likely cause is some internal damage.

+1. A damaged battery that leaks can seriously spoil your day!barryh wrote: ↑Wed Sep 18, 2024 3:11 pm If the battery has been hot enough to melt something I would be very cautious with it. I have the battery located in the old air filter box and now reckon that the sort of fibre packing stuff I put down the back of the battery reacted maybe with the little oil mist coming out of breather pipe that was loose and the packing melted a bit. Firstly I should have not put it there and left battery space around it and secondly ensured a better connection on the oil breather pipe. I think the battery is sound and will check resistance on alternator rotor before taking for test ride tomorrow.

Well thanks for the replies and advice.
Today I took it for a 30 mile quick ride with headlight on and no hiccups. Got back home and it started straight away and I had 12.4v across the battery which wasn't hot which was reassuring.
However after reading the answers and other stuff on the forum I decided to do a little more learning so took the stator plate off, cleaned everything up, checked the rotor and got a reading of 4.
Restarted and had the same 13.5v at revs so I'm just taking that as ok and carry on riding and adrenaline any other problems as they crop up.
As I said I kind of enjoy stuff happening as it's then you learn stuff about your bike and do jobs you haven't done before. Ta again for the help.

4 ohms is close enough to the 3.4 ohms rotors are supposed to be. Most multi meters are not that accurate at very low resistance readings and will typically over read by some fraction of an ohm. Try measuring the resistance when shorting the two probes together and then subtract that from your rotor reading.
