‘86 R80RT Rear Shock

Post by Mdielman »

Hi everyone,
I’d like to powdercoat the spring on the rear suspension assembly, which requires removing the spring. When I try to unscrew the top eye bolt, the whole center shaft just spins. There doesn’t appear to be any point on the center shaft to grab leverage on. How are you supposed to take these springs apart?

Might help?
The eye mount on the top of your shock is screwed onto the chrome spindle of your schock.
Compress the spring and you will be able to slide the tube thats against the eye mount down.
Now you can clamp the spindle with a spindle clamp to unscrew the top eye mount.
You need to heat it so the loctite comes loose but the rubber in the eye mount doesn't like the heat.
If the eye mount is off the spring can be taken off.

Do use loctite when you put it back together.

This helps, thanks! I guess I need to find a spindle clamp, can’t seem to find one online that would work with this shock.
