did my first to me oil chage, the motorcycle has an oil cooler, so filter cover is more complicated than a bike with no oil cooler.
I have other bikes, a 1200 gs, ktms, suzuki, honda, and oil hanges on those are 15-30 mins, on the R100RS was 5 hours, had to take off fairing, move exhaust, remove crash bars, so it was very hard and time consuming, especially the crash bars,
OMG that was a challenge, but putting them back was impossible for me, couldnt install the brackets correctly, thinking about removing them, etc
5 hours for an oil change was surprising!! looked youtube on this matter, but couldnt find one tutorial with bikes with oil cooler, crash bar etc, any tips?

Curious. I have a 1979 RS (resurrecting it) and getting the filter out wasn't an issue even though it was a one-piece filter. Fairing stayed on but I don't have crash bars on that one.
Call me Mel. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me at home, I thought I would ride about a little and see the other parts of the world.

mi problem was removing the filter cover, there was no space to remove it, the only way was removing crash bars, and then the exhaust was also in the way, so had to loosen all the exhaust hardware to move it, very time consuming

Yes the stuff in the way sure slows things down. Rest assured, next time will be quicker.
I've removed my crash bars except for a modified one on the left for a light. I do remove the headers as it's a good time to clean and regrease the exhaust threads and maybe tidy up the headers.
Does your lower fairing have the split in the bottom? That allows you to move that easier if you want.
It's definitiely one of those jobs for a wet day in the shed with some good music.

One small tip... replace the hex bolts with socket bolts... get a ball ended allen key. Also shorten the bolt that is obstructed by the frame tube.

thks for your insights, yes mi lower fairing is split, its easier to get it out, but the damn crash bars, they are ultra hard to get off, and impossible to put them on again correctly

I did my oil change today. I do normally do it inside the garage and with the radio on. But today with the sunshine I wheeled the bike around into the back garden and put a big sheet of cardboard down to collect the inevitable spills. Can't beat sunshine to see what you are doing. The ritual poke of the filter bypass valve was particularly easy to do in the good light.
