Hello all from sunny uk

Post by Pip58 »

Hi there, i own a BMW R60/6 1974.. the bike is stripped after i bought it 18 months ago-ish. i found the dreaded silver smiling bits in my oil yaaa me…… so i completely stripped the engine down… and found the rear bearing to have shed its face through the engine …. lucky for me it had no major consequences phew…… so after much cleaning and gathering of new bearings and thrust washers to boot. i was ready to put the engine together after reading the BMW bible and many other books and You Tube vids…. Mr Brookes was a great resource also….
so heres my problem :- so i bought a green thrust washer for the inside rear crank to inside housing and on the out side i put a new red put it all back together as per info. nipped the front bearing up but not tight and before i put the rear outside thrust washer on i spun the crank yaaaaa it moves round wonderfully yaaa me. then i installed the new red t/w and put on the flywheel with the old bolts as recommended and nipped them up lightly BUT on nipping them up the crank was LOCKED up ….so i’ve tryed many comb’s of t/w’s including putting old ones back which were both RED, and checked the bearing were flush up bother ends….. what the heck!!!!! i’m completly stumpped…
if anyone has any good thoughts on this please let me know. perhaps you could email me cozydram@icloud.com too.
thanks too one and all

The obvious thought is that the inner thrust bearing has slipped off the two locating pins so you're actually locking your new bearings against the ends of the pins. This isn't a good thought! Assuming the cylinders are still off the engine, you should be able to see if the inner thrust bearing is standing proud.

If the bearing isn't seated, then you need take it out again and examine the bearing itself. Typically nipping up the flywheel bolts will damage the bearing face and there's nothing for it but another new thrust bearing. I you're VERY lucky and the bearing isn't damaged, it's simply a matter of putting it all back together making sure that the bearing stays on it's locating pins, then putting the flywheel on.

Slightly off topic but not unconnected... whenever you remove the flywheel (or even loosen the bolts), it is a very good idea to block the crank rearwards so that it cannot move It only needs to move a few mm to allow the thrust bearing to come off the pins. To emphasis the point, below are a couple of pics showing a thrust bearing from an engine where the flywheel has been tightened with the bearing off the pins (twice by the look of it). As you can see, it is completely useless.

Hi Rob thank you for the reply, I will check all your thrust washers just in case how ever I was very vigilant about this and I did have the crank front tapered nosing against the wall with a bolt in to make sure I wasn't damaged.......but I will check them just in case .......I think I still a problem with this ......... but thank you any how......regards Pip
