smoke on start up

Post by jimcarr »

I'm looking for some help with a start up smoking issue. I have a 83 R100RS, 57K miles. On cold start up blue smoke can fill the street (very embarassing). Here is what I've done. At 27K miles when it needed valve seats I also installed DEVES rings. I have used them with exellent results on my R75 motors and never had smoking problems. I had the carbs off last week and noticed a small puddel of oil in the intake ports. I decided after Fridays smoking that I had to remove the cylinders and look at the rings only to see that everything looks great on both sides. Nice sharp edges, no carbon build up on the rings, no sign of oil getting past the rings. I checked compression before and it was 150 both sides. Always ran good and never saw any sign of smoking after start up or oil fouling on the plugs.
Does anyone have experence with DEVES rings and the Nikasil cylinders?
I read that the newer breathers were not a problem like the old ones were or are they?

My plan now is to clean everything up and install new rings but I would sure like to know why this is happining so I do not have the same problem come back. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

The bike stays on the center stand all night then I roll it out and start it. The smoking starts right away and will stop after maybee 1 minute but during that time boy does it smoke. The other thing I did was to remove some oil from the crankcase and that helped a bit.

Valve guides ? When they are worn, she smokes and uses oil.
Some of the above is fact, some is fiction, some is my personal imagination and some is just simple truth. [me]

Valve guides are very good. The only suprise in the heads are the ex valve keeper groves are hammered. I did not expect this as they are only 30K old. The intake valves are orignal and in exelent condition.

Only comment I have to offer is that the rings used on the R75 would not normally be used on the nikasil bores.
I also installed DEVES rings. I have used them with excellent results on my R75 motors and never had smoking problems.
They are different. Are the ones you used designed for use with nikasil?

Stainless steel valves will tend to do that.

I bought everything from San Jose BMW for the bike so I hope they would be the correct rings but!!!!
I just got the breather off and it seems to be weak. By that I mean I can see a small gap between the reed and the face of the breather housing. I would think it should have some pressure on it to stay seated against the housing. Anyone know how they should be? I think I will replace as it is not so easy to get to like the old ones.

You'd hope so, but IF they gave you the same ones as the r75, then they're the wrong ones. The Deves website doesn't seem to link within itself.

Do you have receipts to compare pn's?
