Tempted by the dark side ...

This is for the discussion of Motorcycling. The art, the science, the theory of all things related to our favorite sport... riding motorcycles.

Tempted by the dark side ...

Post by StephenB »

I am thinking about, I read up on it, I study it, it grows on me: K75GS with spoked wheels.

Not too hot on the Paris-Dakar type race fairing and the high exhaust (prefer a shorter Staintune sport exhaust instead), but for sure appreciate getting rid of the mag wheels.

Certanly chaep and reliable.

I have only ridden three or four K bikes and allways found them heavy feeling. That's fine on the road, but not sure how that would translate to GSing.

The emphasis here is on "feeling" heavy: the nekkid K75 weighs about 500lbs with a full tank, just as light/heavy as any other Airhead (give or take), except for the G/S which is about 50lbs lighter given a similar range. My DIY G/S was just over 520lbs with a full tank.

GS'ing isn't on my mind (necessarily).

I like K75s ,I always have ...the specs are brilliant, definitely a bike designed by engineers .But that is the first I've seen on wires and I have to admit to the alloy people , there is just nothing like wires ,they look right ..... like a bike should !

Is that standard ? I've never seen one on wires or has someone just been very clever ? I like it ,a lot !

No, this isn't standard, it's a fairly ex(t)(p)ensive modification: a R100GS front end and a R1150GS rear end with all problems that come with it. Well, if I ever decide to go and do it, it will be well documented and presented in person at Ken's. You know me!

I've seen a Japanese front end on one but combined with the alloy rear it didn't look quite right ! It was a worthy attempt though .An 1150GS rear ?

Was the build of that bike documented anywhere ?

I have a sneaking rememberance of something like that on ADV .
