Real Komodos are very unpleasant animals , they bite then just hang around for a few weeks til you die .

The carved wooden ones are OK .

And how, but you don't need to carry all that. I just use a hammock/tarp set-up from these guys if I'm sleeping solo in warmish weather-

Light, compact. Best sleep I've ever had outdoors. Does well in a storm. And because you don't need flat ground you can use just about anywhere. If you want a separate covered spot to cook and hang out under, just get a silnylon tarp, some parachute cord, and a few extra stakes. You'll still be carrying less weight and bulk than the average two-man tent.

Godot, I can loll about and read in a hammock for a while but could not possibly sleep in one. I have to have a straight back and a pillow of the right height due to a few medical issues (sleep apnea, very crunchy arthritic neck and lower back, sciatica). It took a while for my sleeping system to evolve. I tried to cut some corners to keep the weight down, and wound up crippled for days.
I've investigated hammocks, and know there are ways to sleep on one's side with a straight back, but I'm pretty certain I would feel too constrained. I can't sleep in a zipped up sleeping bag either. Sounds a bit precious, I know, but it's just the way I am. I'm an insomniac, too. I do envy those who can sleep anywhere.

As you have seen in the 'Goanna in the Tent' video, the only nasty predators in Australia are other Australians. O, we've got very venomous snakes and spiders but we are used to them. Sharks too, but they rarely come more than a couple of kilometres inland, unless they are really hungry.

I understand that things can be very different in North America.

You're doing it wrong. You gotta lay at a diagonal, not like a banana directly on the centerline. The hammock I use is designed specifically to sleep on the diagonal to avoid that problem. I realize it may seem counterintuitive and not for Charlie maybe, but....well, Google is your friend. If you're interested, read up on it. You'll see. I know that when I camp w/ people in tents they're always griping about their stiff necks and backs in the morning. Not me. I just wished I'd discovered it sooner.

Ok ,that part might work but another thing is having somewhere to hang it ,there is sometimes a shortage of trees close together over here .
I'd try one if someone had one where i was and was prepared to let me have a go !

I was camping near Banff Alberta a few years ago, on the Spray lakes. Incredible place. Very rugged high mountains. I woke up and peered out to see what the day was like, and spotted a full sized Griz a few hundred yards away, which means I was his if he so desired. They run faster than a race horse. There I was zipped up in my sleeping bag like a sandwich in a baggie. I was really scared, so I slowly and quietly unzipped my bag, found my bike key and still naked, turned down the fuel petcock, engaged the choke, and put the key in the switch. I was ready to ride away naked! I slowly got dressed and into my riding gear even though I hadn't packed up my camping equipment. The Silverback just ignored me as I got ready to escape. It could have been ugly, but I left enthralled.
