Hot wiring ignition & lights

G'day blokes,

In the "Electrical failure whilst away from home" thread Mr GSPD quite rightly says that we all should learn how to hot wire our bikes. Please teach me. I had a sheltered childhood and have never been to prison so I haven't had the opportunity to learn many important life skills. I'm sure some of you blokes can help me out here.

I don't mind spilling the beans, my bike is wired so this regular method won't work.

It is very complicated and not following these instructions to the letter can lead to serious injury and/or death.
You should in the very least have an electrical engineering degree; a PHD in electronics would be preferable.
Ok, here goes...

Run a wire from the battery positive to the coil positive.
That's what the ignition switch does
Ignition, starter, lights, horns, flashers will all work normally.
Kill switch will no longer work.

Yeah, I saw that the ride is on but can't make it. Work Sat/Sun and niece visiting Fri/Sat. The weather will be fine and you will have a beaut time. But be jealous, very jealous. I'm off riding around Tassie for a week at the end of Sept with my new hotwire in the toolkit.

One thing I forgot to mention.

Everything will work only if you leave the green/black wire connected at the coil +.
If you disconnect the green/black OE wire and use ONLY your 'hot wire',
only the ignition will work.

In other words, if you just put out a fire in your headlight bucket or your main harness is beyond fried,
and your only wish is to get back to civilization alive on the questionable charge left in the battery,
use only the hot wire (disconnect the green black).
The charging system will still charge if all its wiring, including the bulb circuit, is OK,

Ah, you lucky bastard. A lap of Tassie on the bike is definitely on the list for me, when that is the next thing to do. I find the map of Tasmania strangely appealing. I hope you have good wet/cold weather gear - I've been in Tas in September.

To get to the coil for the jumper is not easy or fast.

I don't know how late of models with which this will work, but here is what we did. Just use the jumper from the hot side of the battery down to the brake light switch. Presto, ride it off after a bump start.

BTW -It won't work if the brake light circuit or its fuse is blown. (fire in headlight, etc)
