A relay and direct wiring is almost always a good idea as most switches are not designed to carry big loads - even the cheapest car runs everything through a relay these days, all the switches carry is the little bit current required to fire up the relay.

Which also allows the switches to be much smaller and last longer, and handlebar wiring can be much smaller and tidier as well.
