Other than possibly suffering some damage in the crash, the springs were relatively brand new, having been replaced by Bob Grauer when he refurbished the heads in the fall of 2006. The crash was two years later, in 2008.

In fact Bob replaced valves, seats, springs and collets. Everything except the top and bottom spring plates, if I remember correctly.
I really feel bad about destroying half of Bob's artwork with my inattentiveness.

I am going to install the springs (and possibly collets, tops and bottoms - depending on rust) from Bob G's work onto my new used engine that has rusted internals.

The old engine was a '80, the new engine is a '81.
The differences are Nikasil cylinders and different sized valves, so I have to keep the valves that are on the marginal engine.

I have already rejetted the Bings to '81 spec., and pretty successfully (for a first time), if I dare say it. My run to Columbus, OH and back last May showed normal power and fuel consumption.

The part #s on everything except the valves themselves were unchanged from '78 - '84 on the Type 248 engine:

And I'm betting it is NOT a good idea to reuse head gaskets.

I neglected to include them in my order for o-rings - not that I can afford to be throwing another $33 +shipping at this project while unemployed.

Not necessarily recommending this, but I used it once on an air-cooled engine and it worked.
I guess it would depend on how good/bad you gaskets are.
